Birch Creek Elementary Parent and Family Engagement Policy
In compliance with Title I and ESL funding received, Birch Creek Elementary will educate teachers, paraprofessionals, administration, and other staff members regarding the value and usefulness of parent/family contributions. With the assistance of parents/families, our faculty and staff will reach out to, communicate with, and work with parents as equal partners, implement and coordinate parent programs, and build ties between parents/families and the school. Additionally, Birch Creek Elementary faculty and staff will do the following to support parent and family engagement and involvement in our school community:
- Utilize District resources from federal programs [e.g., Title I] and other school funds to provide Parent and Family Engagement activities and resources.
- Distribute information related to school and parent meetings in a language and format parents can understand with translation provided [using school and district resources] when needed.
- Develop (School Community Council), review ( PTO and Faculty Meeting), and distribute ( Back to School Night or Parent Teacher Conference) and abide by the School-Parent-Student Compact that outlines how parents, the entire school staff, and students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement.
- Provide State assessment results and reports to parents. District personnel will assist schools with accessing and distributing the data and reports.
- Invite parent(s) of students receiving Title I and ESL services to be involved in the School Community Council as School Plans are developed and reviewed. (Trustlands, TSSA, Title One)
- Provide parents timely information [e.g., text, email, newsletter, website, social media, phone calls, written notes, in person] in a language the family can understand about the following:
- The importance of involvement
- Utah State Core Standards
- Curriculum in use at the school
- Forms of academic student data used to measure progress through Title One Funds implementation.
- Proficiency levels students are expected to meet
- Resources on how parents can help their children at home.
- Families may request support for family engagement and academic support.
- Provide opportunities and encourage all parents to participate with their child’s class and/or the school in a variety of ways, including:
a. Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)
b. Classroom instruction & activities
c. Schoolwide activities
d. School Community Council - Inform parents of available community programs and resources [e.g., English Language Center, Bridgerland Literacy, Cache Valley Community Center, Community Health Clinics, The Family Place, Project AWARE, Deseret Industries, Divvy Up, Families Feeding Families, Little Lambs, etc.]
- Build parent and family capacity for parental support and familial engagement by:
- Holding an annual Title I Information meeting at Back to School Night annually
- Presentation slides are available on our school website.
- Parent Teacher Conferences
- Curriculum home supports online [e.g., Go Math-lesson videos, Wonders, digital technology]
- Title One Family Literacy Night/One Book One School
- Home to School Connection Newsletter
- Maturation Program for all 5th grade students and their parents
- Schoolwide Enrichment Model [SEM] Parent Nights
- Character Traits communication and informational assemblies
- Holding an annual Title I Information meeting at Back to School Night annually
- Parent and Family Engagement Policy will be discussed in SCC, and PTO board meetings, with faculty and others [including limited English-speaking parents] to be approved annually for planning, review, and improvement.
